Chapter Twelve
Despite Kee’s detour, he made it to the clinic nearly forty-five minutes early. He pulled his truck behind the building, parking in his usual place before tribal headquarters. He liked this spot because it had shade all day from the large pines planted long ago. It did require him to walk across the road that divided the two buildings, behind the women’s health wing windows and around the side of the building where he usually entered through the women’s clinic entrance, or, if he arrived before the clinic opened, through the break-room-side entrance beyond. As he rounded the corner to the break room, he spotted an unfamiliar black dually pickup with Arizona plates pull up on the sidewalk.
Hector emerged from the clinic’s break room door followed by Betty, who carried something in her hands. Kee paused as he wondered what was going on.
Hector and Betty stood not ten feet away from Kee as a white man exited the truck. The man was thin and muscular and wore motorcycle boots, jeans and a green T-shirt. His short brown hair seemed vaguely military in style. His arms were covered from his sleeve to his wrist with blue-black tattoos including circular bands on each bicep depicting a linked chain punctuated by a skull design. A tattooed dagger dripping blood appeared to pass from one side of his clavicle, through his neck, and emerge out the other. He also had a long series of gouges on his right arm that dripped pus.
Hauser was speaking to the man and handed over what Kee recognized as a Z-pak. Zithromax was an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections like the ones on the man’s arms. But this clinic only treated tribe members. There was something off about this and all Ava’s suppositions about his clinic rose up in his mind.
The man glanced up, spotted Kee and reached behind him. Kee had the distinct feeling he was going for a gun. Kee called out to Hector. “Need any help?”
Betty spun about and Hauser glanced over his shoulder at Kee and then pressed a hand to the man’s forearm, speaking in a tone too low for Kee to hear. Then he smiled at Kee.
“Kee, my boy.” Then he turned to Betty. “See to him, will you?”
Betty dropped the gauze roll into Hector’s hand before hurrying across the sidewalk to intercept Kee.
“What’s going on?” asked Kee.
“The guy was sent over by FEMA. One of the construction workers.”
“Why isn’t he inside?”
“Because he refused to come in. Claustrophobic or afraid of hospitals. Who knows?” She tossed up her hands and retrieved the key she had on a pink plastic spiral bracelet. She unlocked the women’s clinic doors and shooed him inside. “Glad to get away from him. He gives me the creeps.”
She followed him inside and breathed a sigh of relief, then locked the door. Then she peered out. “You think Hector will be all right?”
Kee stood beside Betty but he could no longer see the patient. “You want me to go out?”
A moment later the truck roared past.
